The Past is a Foreign Land (Il Passato e’ una terra straniera)

  • Knight Grand Jury Prize and Best Actor, Miami International Film Festival - World Competition 2008

"Shot, scored and directed with terrific command of atmosphere, this study of the relationship between a conflicted law student from a good family and the dangerous but attractive working class card-sharp he takes up with is one of those films that manages to add up to more than the...sum of its parts."
Screen International

Law student Giorgio is a fine young man, with nice friends and good parents who give him everything he needs. Why for some is that never enough? Francesco is cool, handsome and trouble, and draws Giorgio into rigged games of poker with high rollers and low lifes, playing for big money and getting away with it every time. They take more and more risks, until they finally enter the big league. Frighteningly in thrall to Francesco, a trip to Barcelona unmasks the extent of Francesco’s brutal influence, putting at risk Giorgio’s future, security and freedom.

THE PAST IS A FOREIGN LAND is the slacker movie updated for the generation who want luxury without working for it, thrills without consequences and responsibility for no-one except themselves. It’s a cautionary tale of how the weak are consumed by the strong, seduced by the aura of danger and left for dead in the endgame.
